Geography

The Bahamas is a group of about 700 islands and cays in the western Atlantic Ocean, though only between 30 and 40 are inhabited. The largest island, Andros, sits north of Cuba and about 200 kilometers southeast of Florida, while Nassau, the capital and largest city, is located on New Providence. The islands sit atop two oceanic platforms known as the Bahama Banks, and the highest point in the entire country is just 63 meters above sea level on Cat Island. The terrain consists mostly of long, flat coral formations with a few low, rounded hills.

Climate

The Bahamas has a tropical savannah climate, moderated by the warm waters of the Gulf Stream. Cooling trade winds help keep temperatures pleasant year-round: the cooler months from September to May average 21–24°C (70–75°F), while the rest of the year runs warmer at 27–29°C (81–84°F). June through November marks hurricane season, with December through April considered the best time to visit for the most stable weather.

Natural Beauty

Turtles, parrots, iguanas, and the world's largest colony of pink flamingos all thrive in the Bahamas' warm climate. The surrounding waters are home to colorful marine life such as blue tang and stoplight parrotfish, and Andros Island features a 225-kilometer barrier reef, one of the longest coral reef systems in the world. Combined with powder-white sand beaches and clear turquoise waters, the islands offer some of the best snorkeling and diving conditions in the Caribbean.

Culture & People

The official language is English, though the local Bahamianese dialect is also widely spoken. Bahamian culture reflects a rich mix of immigration from across the Caribbean and the Americas, with an ethnic makeup that is over 90% of African descent, shaped by African, American, and British influences. Distinctive local traditions include Junkanoo, Goombay, and Rake 'n' Scrape, all unique Bahamian music and dance styles. The people, known as Bahamians, are widely known for their warmth and hospitality toward visitors.

Places to See & Sights

Nassau's historic streets and colorful architecture make it a natural starting point, while Exuma is famous for its swimming pigs and secluded cays. With over 700 palm-fringed islands to explore, visitors have endless options for snorkeling, diving, fishing, and safe swimming. Andros Island's barrier reef and Eleuthera's pink sand beaches round out some of the country's most photographed natural landmarks.

Festivals & Events

Junkanoo is the Bahamas' most iconic festival, celebrated on Boxing Day (December 26th) and New Year's Day with vibrant music, dance, and elaborate costumed parades. The Goombay Summer Festival, held on Thursdays throughout July, showcases cultural elements like Junkanoo rush-outs, bush tea tasting, quadrille dancing, rake and scrape, and dozens of authentic Bahamian food vendors. National Independence Day on July 10th also brings celebrations across the islands, marking the country's independence.

Your journey, your route, your rental explore every island with total freedom.
